What are RigStands?

RigStands are feet for your camera rig! Whether in storage, at a client's site or on set, placing your rig on a surface can cause wear and damage to your components (e.g. baseplate, bottom of matte box etc.) as well as putting the surface itself at risk of scratches and dents. And it's often unstable – making lens changes and other activities fiddly to say the least.

RigStands solve these problems by elevating your rig off the surface and providing stability. The stands can easily be snapped on and off as you switch between storage/transport, tripod/shoulder etc.

What camera rig system do RigStands work with?

RigStands are designed to work with standard 15mm rail systems (i.e. 15mm diameter rods with centres spaced 60mm apart).

How much ground clearance do RigStands provide?

RigStands will lift your rig just over 5cm from the bottom of the rods to the surface. This is more than enough clearance for the majority of rigs’ baseplates/matteboxes etc. but it may worth measuring your own rig to check this will give adequate clearance before ordering.

How much space will RigStands take up on my rig?

Each RigStand is 17mm thick – so thin enough to fit between existing components, while ensuring it has adequate grip on the rod.

How much do RIgStands weigh?

A pair of RigStands weighs just 54 grams. They add no perceptible weight to your rig.

How are Rigstands made?

RigStands are 3D-printed. They are printed at a high resolution to provide an excellent finish and are available with a number of colour highlight options (see our Shop for info).

The main body of the stand is made from PLA plastic which provides more than enough strength for even the heaviest rigs. It also has the benefit of being a corn-derived plastic (as opposed to e.g. ABS/PETG which are derived from petrochemicals). The tips of the feet are covered in TPU (a rubberised plastic) to provide grip and to protect against abrasive surfaces and chemicals.

How do I attach and remove RigStands?

The easiest way to attach your RigStand is to snap on one side, followed by the other (rather than trying to snap to both rods simultaneously). Reverse this process when removing by simply pulling on one of the legs.

How can I order RigStands?

Visit our Shop! There are a number of colour highlights to choose from – or you can just go with plain black if you're feeling all 'minimalist'!

Why is it made of PLA rather than other plastics such as ABS?

While there are materials that are stronger than PLA, the main reason for using PLA is the reduced harm to the environment. PLA is derived from corn (polylactic acid) whereas other popular 3D printing plastics such as ABS and PETG are derived from petrochemicals. PLA also gives an excellent visual finish.

Material selection is all about application – and for this application PLA provides more than enough strength and flexibility for the purpose, so there is no reason to use stronger but more environmentally harmful plastics.

How much weight can Rigstands support?

RIgStands have been tested to withstand more than 30kg of weight* – far in excess of a typical 4-6kg ‘indy’ camera rig. This provides over 500% structural redundancy – more than enough to handle the occasional ‘heavy-handed’ placement on the ground.

For reference the camera rig used in photos on the Home page weighs 6kg fully loaded as shown (which includes a 1Kg battery).

* A pair of RigStands were tested at room temperature fitted to two rods secured by a baseplate. All weight was added to baseplate/rods to mimic real-world weight distribution.

What is the maximum operating temperature supported by RigStands?

RigStands should not be exposed to temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius. This is far above most cameras’ safe operating temperature (and – let’s be honest - far above most camera operators’ safe operating temperature!).

Shipping  - when will I get my RigStands?

We always endeavor to post your RigStands within one business day of your order, but on rare occasions it could take up to three business days. Any foreseeable changes to this (e.g. due to holiday or stock issues) will be shown on the website and/or ordering will be temporarily disabled.

After that it depends on where you live. In the UK (where we are based) you will usually get your shipment the next day or day after. EU countries should expect around 3-5 business days and other international countries are typically 6-7 days (sometimes more). Obviously we cannot guarantee these dates, but they are fairly reliable indicators.

See the Shipping page for full details.

If I am not in the UK, will I have to pay any tax upon receipt of my RigStands?

We do not include any taxes (such as VAT or Sales Tax) in the price you pay and so in some countries outside of the UK you may be subject to an additional payment upon receipt of your goods.

Product dimensions

Each RigStand is 68mm high, 170mm wide and 17mm thick on the body where it connects to the rods (22mm thick at the toes). They will raise your rig by 52mm from the ground to the underside of the rods.
